Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed on Monday that they had struck targets in Saudi Arabia, including an airport in Riyadh, as tensions between the Iran-backed group and the Saudi-led coalition sharply escalated.
The Houthis said they had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, an Aramco refinery in Rabigh and several military sites in the south of the kingdom. Strong explosions were heard in the Saudi capital on Monday evening by residents and an AFP journalist. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the Houthi claims.
The attacks came as the Saudi-led coalition announced strikes against Houthi “military targets” in Al-Hodeidah, a major Red Sea port controlled by the group. The escalation follows a renewed Saudi-backed offensive against the Houthis in Yemen, including fighting around strategic areas near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Meanwhile, Türkiye and Pakistan agreed to provide military forces and capabilities for rapid deployment to Saudi Arabia under the recently activated Mecca Defence Pact. Signed in August, the agreement provides for mutual military support between the three countries.
The latest developments raise fears that the renewed fighting in Yemen could contribute to a broader regional confrontation.
