Formula 1 is set to return to Africa for the first time since 1993, following a landmark ten-year agreement to host the African Grand Prix in Rwanda from the early 2030s. The race will take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kigali, as part of the country’s broader ambition to become an international hub for tourism, business and major sporting events.
Beyond motorsport, the agreement represents an opportunity to attract foreign investment, create jobs and develop local expertise. Major sporting competitions can generate significant economic benefits through tourism, infrastructure development and international media exposure. Rwanda hopes to build on its existing strategy of using sport to strengthen its global profile and attract international partners.
However, the project also raises questions about its long-term economic returns and the allocation of public resources. Rwanda’s international image remains controversial, particularly regarding human rights and regional security.
The Grand Prix therefore represents both an economic opportunity and a geopolitical strategy. Its ultimate success will depend on whether international visibility translates into sustainable investment and tangible benefits for local communities.
