Hungary signs energy and security deals with US, maintaining Orbán-era ties

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed two memorandums of understanding in Washington on Thursday. The first covers energy infrastructure and regional energy security, while the second focuses on law enforcement cooperation and information exchange. Anita Orbán is not related to former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The public signing ceremony signalled continuity in relations between Budapest and Washington under Prime Minister Péter Magyar, as the agreements had been negotiated during Viktor Orbán’s administration. Earlier in the week, the Hungarian government also asked parliament to ratify a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with the US, signed under Orbán in February.

The continuity in ties with Washington comes despite the US administration’s endorsement of Viktor Orbán ahead of April’s election, which ended his 16 years in power. Orbán had become a prominent figure in the global MAGA movement, with US Vice President JD Vance joining him on the campaign trail. According to Time, European leaders welcomed his defeat after years of friction with Hungary over his close ties to Russia.
