Democrats have secured control of both chambers of Congress following the 2026 US midterm elections, marking a major political setback for President Donald Trump.
All 435 House seats were contested, along with 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. The Democratic Party gained several Republican-held Senate seats, securing a majority in both chambers.
The results are particularly significant because Democrats won key races in states that have traditionally leaned Republican. In Texas, James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton, giving Democrats their first Senate victory in the state since 1988. South Carolina also saw a historic victory for Annie Andrews, the first Democratic senator elected there since 1998.
Democrats also won Senate races in Ohio, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Maine, while retaining their Senate seat in Michigan.
This widespread shift could be described as a “blue wave” across several traditionally conservative states. It suggests that dissatisfaction with the Trump administration may have influenced voters beyond the usual Democratic strongholds.
The results are expected to significantly change the balance of power in Washington. With control of both chambers, Democrats will be able to lead congressional committees, launch investigations and exercise greater control over the legislative agenda. A Democratic majority in the Senate will also be able to block presidential nominees requiring confirmation, while control of Congress will make it more difficult for Trump to advance his legislative agenda without Democratic support.
